Genius Loci: School Environments Integrating Nature & Food, Mind & Body
TRACK: Biomimicry

“We’ve gone from being hunter-gatherers to being sitting-starers.” While students spend more and more time indoors alone looking at screens, recent neurobiology research tells us that learning is greatest when coupled with movement of the body, connected to nature, and working with others. How can we reshape learning environments to integrate outdoor experiences, the growing and preparation of food, and the building of tools and community? An architect and landscape architect share current research and case studies of schools taking the courageous leap into a new kind of pedagogy. Participants then explore applying these approaches in different climates & contexts.
