Designing for ZNE and Passive Survivability
TRACK: Energy

Passive survivability in building design is vitally important as we experience the challenging effects of climate change. Passive buildings are capable of supporting a wide range of human activity and enterprise without the need for mechanical conditioning, and for intermittent periods with no connection to the grid, in “islanded mode.” As extreme climate events and natural disasters become more common, more widely distributed buildings must also be available provide refuge for citizens. Buildings designed for passive survivability also benefit from radically low energy consumption, making them ideal to achieve net positive energy operation.
